This page is made to tell you in short about who we are and also to tell you about our foal and horse handling.

We have recently bought a farm in west of Sealand, Denmark. We had looked for our future home for some time and suddenly it WAS there. Some of the most important things/dreams the house should fulfill was that there should be allot of land, plenty of nature and it should be close to the sea or forest. The farm we found had it all and then some. It had plenty of land for our horses and we can have as many horses as we have the time and money for....because of the huge fields we have. There is only 10 min. ride to the forest and we can see the sea from the garden.

Since the day we bought the farm we have been working hard to make it as functional and horse friendly as possible. Making changes to the farm takes time, when you have a job and the animals to take care of at the same time, but we have managed to get quit a lot done. We still have a long way to go for us to be satisfied with our farm and new plans will probably come to us along the way.

We are Kim Hansen and Anne Kirstine Gersby(Stinne). Kim is 39 years old and work for the danish defense at the unit SIRIUS PATROL on Greenland. Mainly he works here in Denmark, but twice a year he travels to Greenland to check up on things at the base. When he is not at work or doing things on the farm or work with the horses he enjoys to go fishing or sailing. Stinne is 32 years old and has worked as a vetenarian nurse for 9 years, but because of back problems is now started on a new education. Stinne has had horses since she was 12 years old and spent most her free time with her horses or working on the  farm.

We also have 2 ponies (Joey and Sonny) they are both born and breed by Stinne (17 years and 19 years old). Furthermore we have 4 cats, chickens and 2 dogs (a Jack Russell Terrier and a Dogue De Bordeaux). We used to breed Dogue De Bordeaux and used to have 4 of them. Recently we had to put one to sleep (our beloved Amy) and now we only have 1 Bordeaux left. Our dogs enjoy being with us at all time, and therefore our horses are VERY used to having dogs running around them.

Foal handling

We start working with the foal just after it is born. We think that the sooner you start being around the foal the better . The foal get to enjoy being with people and trust them and this is much easier, when they are young, because at this time they are not so frightened of new things. This is our experience as well as many other breeders, and you can get so much possitivity out of the foal in this way.

We spent a lot of time with the foal and its mother from day 1. When the foal is one week old or so it gets its first halter on. They learn to be tied up, groomed, and brushed everyday and learns quickly to get its hoofs picked up and cleaned and meets the blacksmith at a very early state. We also try to imitate the blacksmiths movements and noises on the hoofs (this makes it easier for the horse and your blacksmith).

We take the foal for walks in a halter with and without its mother. The foal also learns to back, turn and stop and get used to move away from pressure (to make it easier later on when you are in the saddle). We try to introduce as many things for the foal as possible for example let him walk over plastic etc.

For start of the training, it is only for about 5-10 min. at a time and gets extended with the foals age, temper and development. It should always be a positive experience for the foal and the training must end before the foal gets to tired or acting in a negative way. We always try to make the ending of the training into a "good thing".

Lots of foals are "left alone" with their mothers for the first 6 months, but we believe that the earlier you start the better for the horse and also allot easier for the handler or trainer. We start to ride and exercise the mother with the foal at her side after approximate. 2 months. The mother enjoys to be having some prime time again and the exercise does her well.

All breeders are different and does horse handling, feeding and etc. in different ways and there are lots of "the right way" to do things. We have found "our way" and a way that works well for us and our horses. And if our horses are happy and sound so are we!!!

Best of luck to you and your horse!!!!!!!!
